Post Just diagnosed Help!
Hi my name is Lora
I was just told I have sleep apnea. I go back Monday for another sleep study for my c pap. I was told that I slept 5 hours and awoke 72 times, an average of 13 times per hour. The longest I went without breathing was 30 sec. Oxygen levels 99.9 when I went to sleep, and low 78.9. My blood pressure was high when I woke up but don’t remember the numbers. I also snore mild to moderate. Same as most, I have been on sleeping aids for about 4 years. Lately I have been getting migrains and my blood pressure at the time of the migrains are around 150/102. Is this part of the sleep apnea ? lack of oxygen to the brain ?

Hi Lora,

Your AHI of 13 indicates mild apnoea. The drop in blood oxygen saturation level to 80% is not great. I suggest that you get a copy of your sleep study results and post them on the 'Sleep Studies Section' of this forum. The more info you post, the better.

By sleeping aids do you mean meds, what type and dosage ? Blood pressure is quite high (assuming you are middle aged), particularly the 102 reading and this alone might contribute to you headaches. Have you been on a 24 hour blood pressure monitor, it would be a good idea ? Reason, your high blood pressure may be related to your OSA, but it could be for another reason. Again, please post more info.

Lack of oxygen to the brain during sleep can cause problems, usually short term memory and cognotive problems.

Best of luck, and post back some more detail and I have no doubt that you will get some good opinions.

Kind regards,

Daniel.

Some sleep meds relax the tissue in the airway and can exacerbate the condition.

The blood pressure monitor will show you the highs and lows (reading every 20 mins or so), but more importantly the times during the day when highest/lowest. Your sleep test report will also highlight any cardiac arrythmias etc.

Best to keep on top of things, as you enter a whole new phase in your life..........and get things back to where they should be.

Daniel.

Maybe I should get a copy of my sleep study results too.   I was given oxygen too, and I have had some real problems with memory loss for the last few years.  My blood pressure was fine; but it tend to run a bit lower than average in my family, and we have faster heart rates.

I think I misuderstood my doctor when he told me I was waking up 120 an hour.  I think he meant to say 120 times a night.  I have a BiPap machine and it is calibrated at 16 and 8, but I can set it in sleep mode at 8 and 6 for 20 minutes until I get to sleep and it automatically ramps up.

I used Swift Nasal Pillows, and haven't any trouble getting to sleep wearing them, or staying asleep.  Maybe I am lucky.
