Post Dont understand my sleep study results
Can anyone shed some light on my results.  Just got these after a sleep study, then a cpap tritration and now I have my cpap machine - all within two weeks.  I thought I had severe sleep apnea but unless I am reading it wrong - why the panic with my doctor and the sleep lab to have me on the cpap machine so quick

First test results
Total recording time 414 minutes total sleep time 330 minutes
sleep onset latency 33.0 minutes sleep effeciency 79.8%
minutes stage n1 13.5 stage n1 %4.1
minutes stage n2 218.0 state n2 % 66.1
minutes stage n3 0.0 stage n3 % 0.0
stage r latency 106.5 minutes stage r 98.5 stage r% 29.8
time on back 10% total number of arousals 77 arousal index 14.00

sleep onset latency is prolonged and sleep efficiency is decreased
there is nornal state r sleep and stage n3 wave sleep
there is normal stage r latency
there were increased arousals from sleep during the night
the patient spent almost all the night on her side

respirator event summary
obstructive apneas o mixed apneas 0 central apneas 0 % central apneas 0
apneas - apneas index 0 apneas/hour
hyponeas 43 apneas hypopnea inc 7.8 respiratory event /hour
5 of tst snoring 1 snore severity mild
baseline O2 saturation 98% low O2 87%
ahi on back 10.6 respiratory event/hour stage r ahi 23.76 respiratory events/hour
I have no limb moves
mean ekg rate 74 no cardian arrhythmias normal heart rate

Impression
The overnight polysomnogram demonstrates mild obstructive sleep apnea with snoring, sleep disruption, apneas and oxygen desaturation.  Tis may represent a case of upper airway resistance syndrone

Thanks for anyones help is decoding all of this

Hi,

do you normally sleep more on your back, or do you stay on your side?  It shows that you apnea occurs mainly while on your back (which is typical) but that you still have significant arousals on your side,.

Does the report indicate how long your oxygen was below 89?  If it stays below longer than 5 minutesat a time, or for a significant number of total minutes, that indicates a problem that needs attending to.

Did you make a typo when you put in how much stage 3 sleep you had?  coz normal is not zero, it's 20%.

I don't think 2 weeks is particularly 'rushing' it.

You don't have severe apnea though....unless you usually sleep on your back and all those hypopneas turn into apneas...then it might be considered severe.

Hi T000579,

So have you tried your cpap yet?  If so, how did it go?
And what were your symptoms before getting tested?

People with mild apnea may have significant symptoms.  I suppose it's all a function of your oxygen levels, the lengths of your apneas, your overall health, how long you've had the condition, and more.

And maybe others can enlighten me, but I don't know what "stage r" is, perhaps REM sleep.  If it's REM sleep and your AHI during REM is 23.76 per hour, that can be typical in patients, and that is in the upper moderate range.  REM is a relatively short portion of sleep (although important), but there are folks who have mild overall apnea but moderate or severe apnea during REM.

Hope things are working out ok with your cpap.

Linda, Yes I have tried my cpap and not going very well.  Can only keep it on for about 3 to 4 hours then I have to take it off so I can get some sleep.(or think I am getting sleep).  I wake up and freak out can't stand for anything on my face.  It is also very depressing.  I am normally an glass half full type of person, but this is really getting to me.  The idea of having to sleep with that thing on the rest of my life is something I can't get used to.  I used to really enjoy sleeping(even if I wasn't getting good sleep) but now I hate bedtime.  Oh yes my symtoms started with dizziness lightheadness.  Did the inner ear stuff then all the heart tests.  My echocardogram showed pulmonary hypertension, so the doctor suggested I might have sleep apnea.  I am of course overweight lost weight last year but gaine it right back, that is when I notices the symptoms.  I know the cpap treatment is my only option, but i feel like I am being buried alive when I wake up and I say forget it and take it off.  Thanks for your concern
