I am 28, 6'1, 250. I have been tired all the time for a while. I went to ENT with concern of sleep apnea, (girlfriend says i stop breathing multiple times at night, very scary to her), did sleep study, average of 23 arousals an hour, lowest oxygen level to 88%, longest stopped breathing was 80 seconds. Not sure of AHI?? He said I have 2 options. He said I have abnormally large tonsils that he could remove, but not 100% sure it will cure apnea. Or start using CPAP. I really dont want to use the machine. I am a very light sleeper as it is, have to be extremeley comfortable for me to sleep. I know the surgery will be very painful, but will go through with it if it will help. Any recommendations??
Id first of all try to lose some weight. You are overweight, even for a guy who is 6'1." Try to drop to at least 200 lbs. If you are a weightlifter and have a thick, muscular neck, stop doing any anabolic substances you might be doing. Not accusing, but you are a big guy and either youre fat...or youre a musclehead. If youre fat, lose the weight. If youre a musclehead, stop the excessive weight training and get your neck under 17 inches in circumference. All anabolic substances cause and worsen sleep apnea.
After youve addressed your excessive weight issue, maybe have another sleep study and see if the AHI/RDI come down to acceptable numbers. If they do, great. If the numbers dont come down, GO WITH CPAP, NOT THE TONSIL SURGERY. CPAP is the gold standard and if you are compliant, use the correct mask, etc. its more or less a sure thing.
But since you are so goddamn big for your height, try to lose some weight, man. Actually, 190 wouldnt be a bad weight for 6'1" especially if youve been dxed with OSA.
