 nose pain anyone?
I've been on CPAP for two weeks now, and last week the bridge of my nose started hurting as if I had been hit by a board. Has anyone else experienced this? My mask seems to fit comfortablly.

Mike
I had some nose pain after using the face mask. I solved the problem by changing to a Nasalaire ? mask. I found it to be more comfortable. On occasions I still use the face mask for a few days and then go back to the Nasalaire.
Hope this helps

Ted, Thanks, that's good news, I guess. Gosh, my nose feels like somebody hit me.
I have an appointment with the sleep doctor next week, so I'll see what my options are as far as a different mask, or nasalaire, or whatever that is. I'm new to this, so I don't know what's out there.
I appreciate all the help I can get. Sleeping with the mask is not as bad as I thought it would be, but sometimes I wake up in the morning, and It's not on my face, and I don't remember taking it off!
Happy slumbers...........

The Nasal Aire is a nose prong system. I really love mine. I have a mask too and keep thinking I should switch off, but it is hard to do as the Nasal Aire is so comfy. Certainly it would help you to have one or another nasal pillow type of system for when the bridge of your nose starts hurting -- I have heard others complain about that too. I think they try padding but that seems like an annoyance.

Hi Mike, I have only been on the cpap 5 days and my nose hurts too. The mask is very comfortable however and I can manage with it quite well. In fact its very soft against my nose at the spot where the pain is. I don't get it. Maybe its due to rubbing a little while sleeping instead of a pressure issue. I am going to hang in there with the mask another week at least before calling for suggestions from the sleep center. It only hurts if I press the area but I notice a red discoloring on my nose too. If I find something out that is helpful I will post you back. Please do the same. Mike

Mie,
I changed to the Swift nasal pillows and it was an instant success.

Mike,
I found Ayr gel in the cold/sinus part of the drugstore, near the nasal sprays. It is a saline gel with aloe, and it helps me a lot with dry nostrils. I use it almost every day with my nasal pillows, and it makes a huge difference!

I still have a bump in my nose but Ayr helped a lot. It's easy enough to find in drug stores, but less expensive if you buy it in bulk online.

Ayr doesn't help the bridge of the nose does it? That was the original question.

For mask pressure on the bridge of the nose, if your mask has a movable forehead T peice, move the forehead pads closer to the face, lifting the top of the mask off the nose some. Also try wearing the headgear straps looser. Masks come in many sizes, and a properly fitting mask should not need to be tight to prevent leaks. I agree nasal pillows will releive this problem. The softer, inflatable cushion of the ACTIVA also applies less pressure to the bridge of the nose.
I agree ayr gel is great for the nostrils if wearing nasal pillows or prongs, yet it could compromise the seal on standard face masks-just as oily skin can.
I have read of people using moleskin or a band aide for extra cushion under mask pressure points, but I think this should be a temporary measure until a better fitting mask is found.
Good fitting masks can also be pressed against the face by the bed pillow. It is important to have a good bed pillow with a tall edge to be able to suspend the mask over the edge when side or tummy sleeping. Common pillows used by cpapers include a memory foam, buckwheat hull, folded down pillow (sleeping on the folded edge) or the specialty cpap pillow - PAPillow, which has curved recess areas designed for mask suspension. The linked thread includes pictures of the PAPillow, or you can do a "search"

Hi,
I just wanted to say that I have the Respironics Profile Gel Mask and it rubbed the bridge of my nose so bad it got infected. I stuck with the mask because it was working like a dream after no luck with the nasal pillows. Anyway, I went back to the nasal pillows until the sore healed and then tried using the Ayr cream on the bridge of my nose and I haven't had a problem since. Not only was it infected but the bone was sore. After using the Ayr gel I have had no problems. But this might not work for everyone. Definitely try it! Also you might want to try Moleskin (I think this is the name). It's used for corns I believe and is sold at your pharmacy. You can stick it to the mask and it might work.
Good luck!

My slight pain is on the outside of the nose, not inside so i'm not sure ayr will work but I will try it. I didn't realize there was a special pillow. I'm on my way to the link next. Thanks for the pillow info. Never would have thought there was such a thing.

If you're responding to me, my pain is on the bridge of my nose but it was more like a sore. Every since I started using the gel I haven't had the sore. You might be different if it is like a bruised pain or something like that. It's worth a try! I hope you find something that works.
