Post Using CPAP - Still have sleep apnea
Hi All,

I am a newbie here and with the CPAP equipment.  I have been using the REMstar (auto with C-Flex) and the REMstar heater humidifier for about two weeks now.  Last night I was awakened a few times becuase of sleep apnea, and could not sleep.  The pressure on the CPAP machine is currently set a 4-20 CM H20

What is my course of action?  I am getting ready to call my doctor at this point.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Apu

welcome
it took me a  full 3 months to get used to my CPAP and Ive now used it for 10 years with much benefit
be patient and have lots of positive thoughs

if using a nose only mask the mouth must be closed or the CPAP can give no benefit at all

Did you have a sleep study to find the correct pressure setting?  My Pulmonologist explained to me that during the titration sleep study that I did was to find the lowest effective pressure setting.  4 being the lowest and 24 being the highest.
If you are set at 4 and are still awakening during the night with apnetic events, I would see my doctor to find out if the setting is indeed correct because you are still apnetic.  It never hurts to ask.  My setting is 12 and I also use the same machine you use with the humidifier.
I wish you all the luck.  One day you'll get it right and won't want to be without it.

Dear Apu,

Have you had your titration yet?  If so you should be using the low and high pressures.  The problem you are having is more than likely because you have the range on your APAP set too wide.  You need to narrow your pressures to make it more affective.

Hi,

Your pressure range seems very wide. Did you have a sleep study and titration study ?

Please post back.

Daniel.

Agreed - it does seem awfully wide.   My prescribed range is 9-13, and my 9 setting seems to work great.  The idea is to find the lowest setting that elminates most of the apneas - I believe I had 2 apneas at 9 (from about 600 without the cpap), which was considered excellent.  Above 13 and I started getting "aggitations" (whatever that means...heh).

I'm going to ask my DMe to up me to 10 - maybe that'll help me clear my sinuses quicker.

Hi Daniel,

Yes I did have a sleep study.  I don't have the range in front of me - but it seems that my machine auto-configures the pressure - that's what I remember from my talk with the doctor.  I have an appointment with the doctor on Jan 23rd and will talk to him and a technician at his office.

I have another problem - I have been waking up in the middle of the night for the last couple of nights, becuase a lot of air seems to be gushing out of the vents in the mask I use - FlexiFit 407 (Fisher & Paykel - HC407).   It even woke up my wife last night (she is a very sound sleeper, bless her heart).  I had to turn the machine on/off a couple times...but the gushing would come back.   I  have put in a new filter just a couple weeks ago.  What could be the problem?

Thanks,
Apurva
