Hello,
I am a new member and this is my first post. I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea earlier this year -- I am an otherwise healthy male in my mid-30s. I decided to go with a Somnamed appliance over CPAP for convenience; my sleep doctor said either could work. I started wearing the Somnamed at the end of April. First few nights, I felt like a new person. For the first time in however long, I woke up with a clear head and ready to tackle the day. About a week later, the sleepiness began to return, and so I adjusted it by a half millimeter. Again, initial results were great, but would wear off after a few days.
I saw my dentist, who specializes in sleep medicine, in early June and he recommended further adjustments if I continued to experience difficulties. Since that appointment, I have extended my devic another full two millimeters -- I have another two and a half millimeters to go before I hit the maximum extension. My sleep was OK, nothing spectacular, but also I did not feel exhausted.
In late July, I began to experience terminal insomnia, e.g. going to sleep fine, but waking up at 4 in the morning. That passed after ten days or so, but now I am just getting no sleep at all, even if I am "asleep". I am exhausted during the day.
I have my first sleep study since my diagnosis next week. Just wondering if folks here might have ideas on what is going on with me. Is it possible for a person to initially react well to a Somnamed adjustment, but then have your mouth "adjust" to the device and return to the previous position that caused sleep apnea?
Grateful for any advice/help. Thanks.
