Post Need a power pack for overnight- suggestions?
I have a Remstar ProM w/humidifier and I need to be away from the main power grid for four days this coming week. I'd like to buy some kind of rechargable power pack that will run my machine for 8 hours between recharges so I can get some decent sleep while I'm away.

What kind of power packs are most suitable, and what should I be looking for?

 Thanks
 Dave

Most of the online Sleep apnea supply stores have a battery back-up that you can buy. The back-ups are very expensive and they don't hold much charge so no humidifier while the the magic machine is blowing air up your nose. DAILY RECHARGE NEEDED.

Some people buy a deep cycle marine battery that will run the machine for a few days at a time but it wieghs about 50 pounds and up. Not good if you are going on a nature trek but OK if you are camping in a tent at a park.

I saw where some guy said he just plugs his machine into his DC/ Cigarette plug and sleeps in the seat of his truck on trips. If you are going to do that don't leave the truck running and make sure someone can jump your truck in the morning.
If you do leave your truck running you probably want care about getting a jump cause you are probably dead. Laughing

Google is your friend.

I think the book that came with your machine tells you not to have the auto running while plugged into the machine. Question

As long as you can recharge the battery daily, you don't use a humidifier, and your pressure is not above about 12 cmh2o; a 12 Ah ( Amp hour) battery will be big enough.  You can get rechargeable jumpstarter battery packs at discount stores that have a cigarette lighter outlet on them; these are commonly in the automotive sporting goods, or camping, section.  Some of these have built in radios, air compressors, or inverters.

This one says that it has a 28 Ah battery; it also has a 120 V inverter -- you could use it with your power brick rather than buying a DC power cable.  Using a power brick instead of a DC cable will result in a 10 to 20% increase in power drain.  Just don't be temped to power your humidifier with it.

Thanks, Beard, I was looking at that one. I do have a humidifier and it's built in, but I think I an just disconnect it if I need to.

Ordered from Amazon, $140. Beats the $450 that repironics want for their battery pack

Post pure versus modified sine wave power
In looking at the battery power suplies.. be sure to check if your CPAP needs pure versus modified sine wave power.

The Duracell power pack looks like its a modified sine wave power supply. Now.. if you're only going to use your CPAP a couple of days at a time on battery power it might not be a big deal. But.. motors in general do NOT like modified sine wave 110-V power.

It took 18 months of using a CPAP in a semi-truck on modified sine wave to burn out the motor.. but.. a CPAP is a lot more expensive than a couple of hundred for the right kind of invertor for your CPAP.

Do some google searching. there are a couple of places the specialize in CPAP battery setups with pure sine wave invertors.

Just get a DC power cord if you are concerned about the modified sine wave.  With a Series M CPAP, the power brick would be the only part that would know that it was a modified sine wave, and it will convert it to DC.

Hey Dave,

I was on the Respironics web site earlier this evening and saw a new power pack they have that only weighs 14lb - if it is not too late, you might want to check that out. They claim 7 hours between recharges, but may be longer if your pressure is not high and you don't use a humidifier.

Good luck!
