Post Battery back-up ???
Does anyone know of a battery backup supply for CPAP? I just got mine yesterday (I slept so peacefully for the first time in 4 months...what relief!!!) and the rspiratory therapist said there is no such thing available. I want to be able to continue camping. I LOVE camping.

I just read Jay's post with a similar question (guess I should look before I post)

However, SOMEONE in the medical community told me that they are available... I just can't remember who. Argh.

Hi Wildspirit,

Yes, there are ways to hook up marine cell batteries.  Call the manufacturer of your CPAP.  ResMed customer service can tell you exactly what you need.  Other manufacturers may be able to tell you also.  There is also a way to use a battery charger, but I am not familiar with it.

Since lugging a 30 pound marine cell around is a little beyond me, I have a 100 foot extension cord I plug into the nearest outlet, (showers, camp site, etc.).  If it goes in the showers, I ask that it please not be unplugged as it is going to a medical device for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.  My subtle attempt to increase public education.

Ive seen this asked before, with complex answers given !!!! Simply,,,go to Walmart and buy a 400 watt inverter for about $50, with enough AC household extension cord to run from vehicle to tent !!!! Plug inverter into cigarette lighter or clip onto battery terminals under hood, plug in extension cord, run to tent and plug in CPap....Sleep peacefully all nite !!! Very Happy Then each morning,,run vehicle about 15 min idling to top off battery!!! Inverter is small compact,,maybe weighs a pound!!! Very light weight, simple and inexpensive!!!! Hope this helps !!!!!! Dan

Post Battery Backup for Cpap
Another option for a battery backup cpap would be the Everest (formally Aura)cpap. This is somewhat new to the market and it has a battery with the unit. A fully charged battery will last 8-10 hours. A great cpap for camping or boating.

At least one new CPAP is built with an optional 12 volt battery as a part of the unit. This is your best option.

For other CPAPs, plugging into a large 12 volt power source is most desirable.  Some CPAP machines will run on 12 volt electric without anything more than the adapter cord that either clamps on to the battery terminals or plugs into the accessory cord on your car, boat or RV.  Check your manual to see  what voltages your CPAP can use.

Many other CPAPS can be used with an inverter.  This device plugs in to a 12 volt accessory jack or clamps on to 12 volt battery terminals.  It has a conventional 110 volt socket that you can plug your CPAP into.  Again check your manual or call the manufacturer to see if their equipment will work with an inverter and what size they recommend.

I use a 300 watt inverter with a 21 amp hour jump start pack.  This provides enough power for a night's use with a comfortable reserve and recharges rapidly.

Be careful not to use a heated humidifer with most inverters. It can damage them. I add hot water to my humidifer right before bed. I have found I can plug the inverter into my car's cig lighter, use the pap about 8 hours and my car still starts in the morning. I do carry a jump start just in case. They costs around 40 to 75 dollars. Just remember a regular car battery is not built to be drained all the time. A deep cycle battery is best. This is what I put in my car. It will start the car and is built to be drained on a regular basis. If the battery is used indoors it MUST be sealed. A regular car battery should never be used indoors.

I know people who use this.  You can buy it at Sears for $44 and it only weights 12 lbs.  I just have to figure out HOW they use it!
