Post Can you successfully comply with a deviated septum?
I am way too much of a wuss to get the surgery to fix....so. myy question is ...

Is there anyone out there who complies with CPAP in spite of their deviated septum?  if so, what kind of mask do you use?

One more question.....As the weather gets colder  I am quite bothered by having cold air thrust into me - I already have the humidifier on full blast - am I the only one that hates this sensation?

Thanks!!!

Full face mask, period.

Or any mask that allows mouth breathing.

You can certainly avoid the surgery, if that is your desire.

Finally, you may want to opt for a stand alone humidifier, such as a Fisher Paykel. Fisher Paykel excels in humidification.

Good luck.

After decades of mouth breathing, I finally got my septum fixed this spring.  It was no big deal at all.  I did not even use one tablet of the prescription pain killers he gave me.  I am very gladd I got it done, and it did help my cpap a lot.

The deal is this...if they are only cutting out the cartilage from the middle of the noise, you will almost not feel it.  It is only if they screw around with the outter part of the nose that is hurts like heck.

Post How you can comply with deviated septum
Sit, when it growls Sit!
Jump, when it growls Jump!
Roll over and play dead when this is growled.
Otherwise, don't argue with it.

Full face mask as suggested.  I use F&P 431...works great for me!!!

Good luck.   Your cyber friend, JuJu

I have a deviated septum that was supposed to be repaired in August - I backed out, since I was already having a partial thyroid removal.

I use Swift nasal pillows - no problems.

When you say full face mask - does that include a hybrid?

I hate my full face mask (ultra mirage) I can never get it to fit properly.

ALSO:  If you are using a full face or hybrid - do you still wear your nightguard (if you use one for bruxism)?  I have this mental block about wearing my nightguard with a full face mask on.  I know, I am nuts!

Thanks!!!

Yes you can! I use the Liberty Hybrid. It opens up my septum by direct air pressure. I too do not want to get the septum fixed, I am one of those Murphy's law people!!

Post Just had the surgery
I just had the Deviated Septum surgery this past Thursday, and Tonsillectomy... Was gonna do the whole UPPP but insurance would not allow it since my Apnea number is below 15. To be honest the deviated septum is not painful, it feels Very stuffed but that will go away soon. The tonsillectomy is painful but it will be fine.

I will try and come back and let people know if this surgery has helped my apnea..

Post Surgery
I had the surgery to correct my nose problems in July.  It took 45 minutes and I missed it all.  When I woke up I was already breathing better than I did before.  The drainage lasted a few days, and was the extent of the inconvenience.  I went back to the doc after a week and congratulated him on his success.  He said "wait 'til I remove the shunts" - such was the improvement I didn't realize that there was anything up there.  The shunts were removed after another week - and the rush of fresh air was exhilarating.  I should have had it done 40 years ago!

A week later, I went back to using my CPAP a couple of weeks later.  It had been unused for years.  I've since had a new sleep test, and today received my new VPAP machine.  I'm a "bad" case - my pressure is 30/24 on a bpap setting.  The surgery cured years of discomfort I'm breathing like I never have before.

Please, don't be a wuss - your life could depend on it.  d'oh!
