 Vicki quick ?
In the recipe you gave it has karo syrup in it. I was wondering if you could sub it with honey?
Honey has antibacterial property to it. Also when it is mixed with water it turns into a
mild hydrogen peroxide. I do not think I would use it all the time, but when you might have a
mild sinus infection it might kill the bacteria that is causing it?

 Availability
I tried a kit I got at the pharmacy. I had great results, my nose and sinuses have not been this open in years. I looked over the different models listed earlier in the post and like the hydro pulse. I am wondering if anyone has info about newer models and if anyone knows if these are available through a DME or pharmacy? I did send an email to the manufacturer but they have their own web site to sell them.

Pennysworth,
Sorry I didn't remember to respond to this. I think you are on to something. My doctor's office was very unclear about what the Karo syrup was for, but since I taught microbiology I agree that maybe it is for the antibacterial properties. They would both be antibacterial for the same reason. It has to do with the high sugar content dehydrating the bacteria. The office told me it was to better simulate our physiology and that may be part of it too.
Just a blub about honey for people who don't know. Never give a kid under the age of one honey. Honey naturally contains botulism bacterial spores which are commonly found in the soil and our environment. In older people, the normal resident bacteria in our gut keep us from getting sick, but infants do not have that normal bacterial flora established yet and the spores can geminate into toxin producing bacteria and make them sick.

Gerry,
Check out Water Piks, they do the same thing and are less than half the price of the sinus irrigation systems I checked the price of. You can buy a special attachment for the Water Pik. Although, the cost of the attachment is pretty expensive. At any rate, do some cost comparison.

 Ordered
I ordered a hydro pulse. I have had fantastic results just using a the bottle kit from the drug store. I decided on this one after you told me to check the prices that they were basically the same. I would have to purchase the one then the tips to use with it. I wanted two tips because my son has terrible allergies and gets nose bleeds frequently like I did at his age. Hopefully it will help him to. I will post an update once I get it and start using it.

Well I just ordered a hydro pulse. I am hoping for good results. I had septoplasty for a bad deviated septum, A nasal polyp removed and one of my sinuses reopened 4 weeks ago to the day. I felt pretty great the second week (the week they removed my nasal splints) but starting the middle of the 3rd week I started feeling bad. I knew something was up.
I go back to my DR and he tells me I have an infection where my stitches are on the left side. HE tells me he thinks it's from me not irrigating hard enough because he can see a lot of buildup. I was using the neil med treatments with squeeze bottle but I did notice there wasn't a lot of 'debris'. So I'm back on antibiotics and the DOC tells me to use a squeeze syringe, to squeeze HARD and it should be better. Well I'm squeezing as hard as I can and still don't see a difference in debris runoff. I've been using the syringe and back on antibiotics since last Wednesday and feel slightly better but still not great.
SO Keep your fingers crossed! i'm reading great things about the grossan Hydro pulse and can't wait to put it to use.

 nasal irrigation
Hello to everyone in this discussion. I have been using the Grossan Hydro Pulse nasal irrigation system for 2 months. Initially I used boiled water, after mentioning it to my doc, she said; Always use distilled water. Me, why? The doc said why would you want all those chemicals in your head? I currently have a mild sinus infection, and irrigate 3 X daily. So far, it hasn't cured it, but I usually have to have an antiobiotic by now - so I feel I am ahead of my pre-nasal irrigation status. I am in the 4th night of using ResMed Elite ll Cpap. Since I also use D.I. in it, I investigated a Distiller. The information I read sounded like it would take a lot of time & effort for a small amount of D.I. With the irrigator and Cpap, & cleaning up after each, that is about as much extra time and effort as I want to spend and still have a life - or for what passes for one until I get regulated on Cpap.
My initials are J.R.J.R., my husband calls me junior, my given name is Janet - I am called Jan - and like most, I respond to everything but - hey you.
I am so grateful to have found this site - I wish I had discovered it before I got my equipment. jrjr

Well, I got my grossan and have been using it every since. Everyone in the house had the sniffles and I am walking around with my nose open. My nose hasn't been open on a regular basis for over 40 years because I have bad allergies. I still have the little bottle that I can take with me and sometimes that is quicker and easier to use than setting the machine up. I have a bottle at work for irrigating too. Irrigating has definately helped me.

 question on usage??
I received my grossan and used it for the first time yesterday. I'm liking and will post my ongoing experiences with it.
My question is this.. How many times a day should I use this? I currently have an after surgery infection where the stitches are in my left nostril from septoplasty. My DR suggestedd irrigation every 4 hours while awake to help fight this along with MORE antibiotics which I am not happy about.
I used the grossan this morning and plan on using the neil med squeeze bottle while I'm at work, but want to use the gorssan again tonight before I go to bed. Is this too much? I have not seen anything on suggested usage per day with the grossan.

 frequency of nasal irrigation
to David: I have had five sinus surgeries - wish I had known about this particular technique then. Have you specifically asked your doc how frequently you can use Grossan? I can only relate what I am doing, My current sinus infection is improving, & I give all credit to frequent use of Grossan. I used two containers full, (one for each side) & used a Neil Med Sinus Rinse package in each, each morning & evening. I repeated this during the day as I felt pressure building (2 to 3 times) After repeating it, my nasal tissue felt soothed, until the "river" of sinus drainage began again. I am much better, But repeat the two containers each morning & evening. This is the first sinus infection, EVER, that I have not had to take an antiobiotic. The last one (before Grossan) I was taking antiobiotics for a full month. I tried using the bottle while deciding if it was worth paying $97.00 for the unit, based on a bunch of comments on the web site. I am wary of something that sounds too good to be true & I didn't know about the other options for other brands, or the less expensive Water Pic unit.. A member of my family was visiting. He saw my botttle in the bathroom, and said from his little town in Moab, Ut. his doctor had recommended it over a year ago. It didn't cure all his sinus/allergy problems, but so far they are managable. A personal recommendation convinced me to try it.
Since you are in recovery, my only thought would be to follow your doctor's instructions exactly. Best wishes to you and I hope the nasal irrigation will help all of us who are posting about our "drippy nose syndromes" and make them. at least managable. JRJR [/b]

another question about Grossan and use of Distilled water
Well My Dr's appt is tomorrow. Hoping to get some answers why I'm still having issues.
I do have a question about the Grossan and use of Distilled water. This is quickly becoming a pain as I go through the water so quickly.
Is it possible to use Boiled water or How about water from a Britta Filtration filter? WHat other means do you guys have to use water other than distilled store bought?
thanks!!

 Distilled Water
Hi David, My sinuses & allergies have improved since I began using the Grossan. I read in another post that using the Grossan eventually discouraged his sinuses to stop over-reacting, I think that will happen to me. I hear you, when you said the getting enough Distilled Water is hard, I now buy enough for 2 weeks, and it makes it less of an issue. I originally used tap water, until my son reminded me when he had a fish tank, he was told, chlorinated tap water would kill his fish. He was about 13, & asked me, should human beings be drinking it? It was a family joke, but when my doc recommended distilled,I thought it was too much trouble it & started boiling the water. Then discovered boiled water, killed the bugs, but did nothing to clear what I thought was chlorine & a few chemicals in our tap water.
My next stop was to check the Web cite of our public water system. It was a shock to see the PAGES & PAGES of chemicals, inorganic & organic contanaimants. etc. etc. etc, in our tap water. NASTY things I have never heard of are lurking in my glass of water. Plus the EPA announced in 2007 that we have all sorts of pharmaceuticals like antiobiotics, steroids, etc. in the water. The amounts are low, but no one knows what they will do to us. I switched to distilled
I am still using distilled, but am somewhat interested in the filtration systems. A doc I know, said their ads say they reduce or eliminate most of the chemicals, etc, but if our multi-million dollar public water systems can't eliminate all the stuff, can an inexpensive unit do it. He also said, if I bought one, I should have my water tested by a private agency to find out if they really do the job. If you go that route, will you post your results? I am learning bit by bit. Good Luck, JR
