hhopper what a fine looking group of cats. That Streak looks a little on the mischievous side to me.

Alright everybody, what do you all think of IE7 or did you move to a different browser? I'm glad to see IE finally get the TAB browsing but sure took MS long enought to get it in here. Course that are more changes than just the TABs but that is what you really notice right off.

Now don't tell me that this is the best we can do for a list of being an old computer geek. Here's are two new items then.
 27. You remember when Microsoft was a company that did not sell an operating system.
 28. Sperry Rand and Bourghs were seperate companies, now known as Unisys.

Think that would fly for an old computer geeks.

Streak (look at her face and you'll see why we named her that) is a sweet cat but she can give you a look that'll stop you in your tracks.

I like IE7 well enough. I've used other browsers in the past, but since IE5 I keep coming back to IE. Always had stability problems with Opera, and I tried Firefox and didn't like it. Memory leaks make it crash regularly (at least 1.0 did), and I strongly dislike that it stores passwords you save for websites in clear text files. Probably I use IE mainly because it is a corporate standard and it is what I use all day at work, so I just gravitate towards it at home too. But it isn't perfect by any means.

Now that Vista and Office 2007 have gone to manufacturing, I've downloaded them from my MSDN subscription and have been running those. Office 2007 is a huge change, and I'm still undecided on it. Looks like they tried to remake Office in the image of something Apple. In some ways it works, in some ways it doesn't. My laptop doesn't support the new fancy aero GUI of Vista, so it is pretty much just running an even more bloated version of XP for me. I haven't loaded it yet on one of my machines with a better video card, I'll probably get around to that next week sometime.

I've been itchin' to build another for awhile. Probably early next year for that though. Holidays eat my moneys. d'oh!

Neonhomer, when did you use an Amiga, which one did you have?  As you may have noticed from my post, I'm still using one.  And I know Amiga users who are getting on the internet using one.

Sorry for the delayed response.  I have used an A500, A2000, and A1200. I still have one of my A500's and my A2000. The A1200 belonged to a friend of mine, and I used to use it on occasion.

I used to have a fully loaded A2000. Dual floppies, SCSI CD-RW, GVP hardcard w/ memory expansion. It was stolen out of the back of my car a few years ago. I have since obtained another A2000, but it is a barebones model.

Will so did you ever load Vista up on another machine yet or not? What is your impression of it? I'm getting ready to order a PC at work to see how well Vista works and what changes we will have to make to get our software to work with it. Would like to get some one's opinion on it.

HeSaveDave I'm going to build the wife and me new systems this next year. Probably in Sept. as I have a major project at work till Memorial day weekend and will be to busy to work on that. What are you looking at building? I'm waiting to see if AMD comes through with their next gen chips to compete with Intel's latest ones. Should see them by the third quarter I hope.

A friend of mine just tried to load Vista on his PC. His system's not too shabby; he's got a 3.4 GHz P4 with two gigs of RAM and an ATI Radeon X800 video card, well within the requirements for running the OS. He sat through three hours of the install. It was something like 95% complete when the status bar started moving backwards...then he got an error that Vista couldn't be installed on his system, so it rolled back to XP. Something about his hardware that it didn't like. DOH! d'oh!

I'm going to build a new PC during my holiday vacation as well. I've had the same motherboard and vid card as he does for the longest time, still in the boxes. Before my BIPAP, I just never had the oomph to put it all together. I went all out and bought a gaming case from a vendor I saw on Price Watch with a 680W power supply and LED lighted fans. I'm also installing a Plus Deck 2 drive I bought from Think Geek.

CatNappin, that's basically what happened on my laptop with Vista. About 3 hours in and like 88% and it blew up and rolled back to XP. It took a bunch of fiddling with upgrading drivers and removing apps to get it on there.

Ozone, I did install it on a couple of lab machines at work. First using VMware I created a virtual machine on my main desktop, and that worked fine. Only problem is that VMware's graphics adapter doesn't just pass through what you actually have, it emulates a fairly low end card, so I couldn't run the Aero Glass GUI on it either. So... I got one of the desktop support guys to issue me another machine as a lab machine, and I installed it on there.

My impressions?  Bleh...  Microsoft is continuing down the line of locking down the OS and making it hard for power users to do anything. I haven't spend enough time with it to learn how to scale back the security settings, but out of the box they don't give you access to the run command, and everytime you launch any sort of system configuration related app (like anything in Control Panel including Control Panel itself), you get a popup dialog warning you that the system is attempting to launch an app and you have to confirm that you really want to do it. Apparently the account you create during installation is in the local admin group, but doesn't have permission to modify any of the security settings in Securiy Center without going into Services and killing it altogether. Also out of the box you have to jump through hoops to get on any network, even one you're wired into at the time of installation.

The Aero Glass interface doesn't really add anything of value, it just seems to consume more resources. I guess it is "prettier," but the functionality is the same as the Vista Basic GUI that you get if your video card can't handle the Glass GUI. Honestly, for myself I'd probably just use Vista Basic even on a machine capable of running Glass.

So far, not real impressed, but I haven't spent just a ton of time with Vista yet.

I'll upgrade to Vista© when I get another computer.  There are way too many hassles in upgrading.  XP© works fine for me.

After reading the Vista notes I think I'll stick with XP for awhile longer as well. I hope it's not another Windows ME about to happen all over again. I really hope MS gets it together with their OS. XP was nice but I was hoping Vista would really be some thing like what Windows 95 was when it came out. Guess I'll have to keep waiting.

What processor would you all recomend for a new system? I might get the itch and build one next month after I survive the holidays.

Yeah, Vista adds a few nice features particularly with file management, but on the whole it is just a more bloated XP. I'm planning to build a gaming computer in the spring as a graduation present to myself once I finish my master's thesis, and I'm not convinced that I won't put XP on it instead of Vista. There just seems to be a lot more overhead that affects performance with Vista, for not much gain. Nothing that is new in Vista is a "must have" really.

As far as processors go, a Core Duo system would seem to be a given. As far as which one, some of it depends on your view of overclocking. The Core Duo line apparently overclocks very well from some stuff I've read, so you could get away with a lower priced processor if you weren't opposed to overclocking it.

We're getting closer to the launch date of Vista. We should see MS go into full out advertising of Vista here soon. I can't wait till the ads start. I hope they are at least as entertain as the Apple ones have been. How many here are going to run out and buy the new system? I plan to wait about a year before I go buy. After the comments here I can see I need a system with a little better video card.

I have a great case I bought about a year ago. It's still in the box. I will start buying parts here after the first of the year. Is anyone here using a SATA hard drives and what do you think of the? I'm still using the old interface system and I wonder if it's worth the upgrade to SATA.

SATA is worth it if you're doing a lot of disk intensive things on your computer, the I/O on it is obviously much faster at 3GB/s vs. typical 133MB/s IDE. SATA drives are as cheap as IDE, I was looking at a 320GB SATA drive on newegg.com a few weeks ago for like $70-$80. If you already had plenty of IDE disk space, I probably wouldn't worry about buying a new drive right off. Seems like the main thing now is to get the best video card you can afford, and try to run at least 1GB of RAM.

Will thanks for the advice on SATA. I will probably move that way when I build my new system. Right now it going to be finding the time to do it, not so much the cost.

Everyone, MS has released an update for IE7 to speed up it's anti-phishing checks. I go to a few WEB sites where IE7 has just slowed down to nothing. You have to get the update from the MS site not Windows update. I went through the Downloads and Trials, Internet and found it there. If IE7 has been real slow on your system this is worth the time to get and install. Really made a difference on my system.
