I was going to say the early sales of Vista don't look all that good. Had a great launch date but that was about it. Saw a couple of articles that people are having a really bad experience with the upgrade from XP to Vista. Kinda like when they went from Win98 to WinMe. Well at least MS has not changed all that much. New product same old problems. My wife asked me if I was going to upgrade to Vista and I told her next year I would get around to it. I want to wait for the first service pack. Well it seems that MS has already started work on the first service pack.

There's no way I'm going to upgrade to Vista. I've gone through that deal of trying to find drivers for my older equipment before. I'll get Vista on my next computer when everything will be compatible with it. Windows XP has worked great...I've had only one system crash in two years.

Yeah, my messing around with Vista is mainly because 1. it was available through my Microsoft subscription at work, and 2. as a network admin I'm going to need to know both how the new OS is going to play on our existing network, and what things we're going to need to look out for and manage at a domain level when we do start deploying Vista down the road. If I was just a regular consumer/end user? I wouldn't even be bothering with it at this point.
But hey, at least Vista is patched for the new U.S. Daylight Savings Time changes coming up next month. It's the only Microsoft OS that is ready for it.

If I had a second computer that was powerful enough to handle Vistaâ„¢, I would probably play around with it too. New software, especially operating systems, is always interesting.

Will didn't MS release a patch for XP on the daylight savings time? I thought I remember something about a patch being available for it.

Actually M$ has patches for every system still being supported here. If you have kept up on updates the patches should have already been applied.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough ... yeah, MS released patches for XP/2003 (and 2000 if you have a *very* expensive support contract, not just a standard one). I think the OS patches have been out for a little while, but they just released the patches for Exchange/Outlook last week. Between those and Blackberry (and other mobile devices), companies like mine have a mini-Y2K on their hands.
I was just saying that out of the box Vista already has the DST fix in place, whereas the other operating systems need patched.

Ok, I admit it, I haven't read most of this topic. Any topic involving computers gives me a headache. (No lie!)
All I know is this Vista stuff confuses me. But I made it a rule never to buy the first version of anything with a significant change to it ....be it software or a car.
But now I'm really confused. I promised myself that if I get this new job, I would get myself myself a laptop, my first. Dear god, are they selling all the new stuff with Vista? Can I get one without it? I don't want to break my rule.
That said, I have come here to confess.......
Normally I read the system requirements before purchasing software. I tend to forget my computer was purchased about six years ago. I think it was outdated as soon as I got it home... heck, as soon as I bought it. But this time I messed up. And I can't even blame it on untreated sleep apnea (sure wish I could!). I went and bought Dragon Naturally Speaking, only to find when I tried to install it, I don't have enough RAM. I didn't even remember what RAM I had, I had to check, 256 MB, I believe. (ok, feel free to laugh).
... I figure confession is good for the soul... or foolish, I'm not sure which.

Linda, adding more RAM is one of the easiest and cheapest upgrades you can do to a PC. There are several reliable free scans that will tell you exactly what you need. Crucial.com is a good one and they stand behind their product 100%.
Most new PC's are going to come with Vista pre-installed unless you get a custom built one.

Thanks for the tip, Jean.
I need all the help I can get.
The last time I ever opened up a computer was.... ok, I'm not going to admit it.
As I said, everything about computers makes me nervous. But if you said it's easy..... I'll give it a try... eventually. lol
Thanks!

I help run two PC help sites ...... I have tons of resources. Let me know if you need help. Adding memory is like plugging in a cord to a socket.

Linda, most companies will still sell computers with XP if you ask for it. They will not push it. I just ordered some new systems and have them coming with XP as I'm not going to Vista yet. You can also buy some systems from a few companies without an OS on them.

 Vista is HORRIBLE
Hey all just ran across this and have to say that vista...omg i hate it!! i beta tested prolly 2 different versions of it and couldnt stand it....things were waaaaaaaay more complicated than it had to be plus i had numerous problems with it. I will openly admit it was beautiful but just too many problems....i do tech support and computer repair for a living so i will have to fully learn vista sooner or later but not yet....i want nothing to do with it yet!

I doubt seriously that Vista is going to be taking off here any time soon. I a feeling that XP may out sell it for a few more months. Course when I read that MS had already started working on the first service pack that kinda told me that they rushed Vista out the doors. Visat will eventually take over for XP but I have a feeling that it might be a while.
