Post my dad
Hi,
I am pretty sure my dad suffers from Sleep apnea. The  problem is that when ever any of us try to talk to him about it he gets very defensive.
He won't admit that it could be a major problem. I am very worried about him, and I feel really desperate as his mother is dying from a major Aortic Anurism.
I don't want him to go the same way!

Hi Rosie,

That's tough.

You might consider printing out some material from the website of the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA).  The link to their website is below.

Print out some of the general stuff (don't want to scare him too early with treatment info, in my opinion), and leave it around for him to find.
Sometimes that's easiest, for he's discovering it on his own without pressure from family, or not too much.  He can read what he wants when he wants.
Just a thought.

Perhaps you can find someone, a family member or friend, who has sleep apnea and is being treated for it successfully.  He might be more apt to listen to someone like that.

Maybe someone else will have some good ideas.

Rosie,

I suggest you tell your Dad just that -- you love him and want him around for a while.  Sleep apnea if untreated can cause a lot of other medical problems.  Good luck.

Just to say thanks for you help.
The problem is that there just isn't much about this desease in the press or any where for that matter.
I don't know where you guys are from but we live in the UK and it is'nt a big thing over here. I don't live with my parents as I have a young family of my own, but we all see each other regularly.
I think i need to broach the subject with my mum and see if we can't find a way for him to see sence. I feel for her a great deal as she suffers at night with the snorring. I feel so helpless!!!

Hi Rosie,

I'm just accross the water from you.

A good point of contact for you would be The Sleep Apnoea Trust Association. They have a web site at
www.sleep-apnoea-trust.org. They are completely voluntary, not for profit and have a full network of help lines.

Daniel

Rosie, you print this out and give it to your dad.
I am a 38 year old father of four. I am a big man 300+ pounds. I too got very defensive when my kids or wife made comments about my very loud snoring or the fact that I would quit breathing. I was being treated for high blood pressure and depression. I finally went to my doctor with the sleeping problem and had my sleep study. I have severe OSA and now using a CPAP machine. I am not tired anymore, I have more energy, I am starting to lose weight because of the higher energy level and I am not as moody or cranky. If I notice all these differences in myself imagen what everyone else sees. I hope that he will see the light as I did.
