I have tried many diets and exercises, but to no avail. I manage to lose a few pounds initially whenever I start something new, but I am back to square one again! I am completely exasperated and feel depressed. I do not know what to do. I will go to any extent to get a fit body.

The problem I see if that you say you are trying DIETS. You can't diet. A diet is temporary. You need to make a lifestyle change.
A few tips:
* Bad words (in menus/recipes, etc.): fried, creamy, breaded, smothered, au gratin, hollandaise, tempura
* Good words: broiled, steamed, au jus, grilled, baked
* Don't think a salad is healthy just because it's a salad. Often salads are more calories than a hamburger - and when I say hamburger I mean Big Mac.
* At restaurants, I always request vegetables instead of the fries that come with my food. I've gotten to where fries don't even taste as good as they used to.
* Don't think lowfat or fat free means low calorie. I've read that often they put in extra sugar to replace the fat. Sometimes it's better to eat the regular one rather than fat free. Check the nutritional label!
* WATER!!! (give up pop [even diet] and sugary drinks...I know this is hard. I've done it. But it's worth it!)
* FIBER!!
* Watch your portion size. Using measuring cups if necessary.
* Journal every single thing that goes in your mouth. You will be amazed what all you eat.
I very much agree that Weight Watchers is great. Much of what i wrote is from WW. Good luck!!!
This is what I like about WW. They will address all those things your stated and encourage permanent life style changes as you learn about healtheir ways of choosing and making foods. They also teach you that special fatting treats are acceptable if you plan for them. They will also show you how to read those labels and what exactly they mean. It helps when you are grocery shopping and trying to compare brands and learn what a protion is.
Good luck !

Greetings edged!
Zig Ziggler said "find yourself a skinny doctor". Currently I am working with a nutritionist along with my encouraging GP.
I have also purchased a Total Gym. Yes, they are expensive but the thing is they are right there every morning so I do use it most days a week (ya need to heal the muscles you strain on some days). This is very important. Not only does the exercise burn calories but more lean mass in your body along with better circulation continues to encourage calories burned.
When I am finished paying for the Gym the money I spend there will go toward a personal trainer (probably my daughter). Good for her finances and my health.
My weight loss plan is to do it slow. I will loose about 25 more pounds by February 2010! By the time I get there eating healthy will be "normal" to me and something I keep the rest of my life Lore willing!
I need to lose 30 lbs, so I decided to do it 2-1/2 lbs per month and go slow.
I decided that I don't need sugar so I have given up all candy, ice cream,
cake, candy and cookies. This has worked out great for me because I was
a real sugar addict.
Weight watchers is great, and I hear you can do it online, if you really can't
make it to the meetings. However, feel free to post on this website if you
need any encouragement.
Best to you!

I think it's great that you have given up all sugar and it's working. I also am a sugar addict and I could never do that.
I will say that I have read and watched reports on TV that say that people who fully give up everything that they like are more likely to binge and gain weight. Also in a Dateline, they set out a plate of cookies. The people who weren't dieting/depriving themselves only ate one cookie. Those who were dieting ate numerous cookies.
What I'm saying is everyone deserves a treat here and there. While losing weight is great, having a piece of cake on your birthday isn't bad. It's having 2, 3 or 4 pieces (or more). One piece isn't going to make you gain a pound. One pound is 3500 calories and a slice of store bought cake with icing is about 400 calories (I think...from googling).
If you are wanting to lose a pound a week, you will need to cut out 3500 calories each week. It's that simple. When it comes to what to do...it's really all about calories. Yes, fat, sugar, sodium, etc. those are important too, but calories in, calories out are the most important.

Absolutely...it's NOT a diet...it's a LIFESTYLE CHANGE.
The following book has been EXTREMELY helpful to me...got hardcover at Amazon(about $14 including S/H)
The Beck Diet Solution...have referred to it many times since buying it in March...theres also a workbook that goes with it.
I also find that logging my food on a site(fitday or dailyplate) holds me accountable. I "try" to live by the motto:
PLAN IT;LOG IT;STICK TO IT !!!!!
I myself had a TON of weight to lose. Had gastric bypass surgery Dec '07...down 170 lbs with about 20 more til MY goal.
