Are you allowed to take distilled water along in your airline carryon for a CPAP humidifier?

If not, what's the best bet for finding distilled water late at night in a strange city?

In short... no.

It is safe to use tap water on a short term basis.

Daniel.

As Daniel says, it is safe to use tap water as long as it is potable water, which it surely is.

If you have reservations with a hotel, or if you will be staying with friends, perhaps they would buy a container for you so that it will be there when you arrive.  But if they would be charging a handling charge, it probably wouldn't be worth it to you so use the tap water.

Most all drug stores and grocery stores have it.  If not, you probably have bottled water available in the hotel.

Well TXLadybug hit on it ... distilled water is best, bottled water is better than tap (fewer chemicals and no chlorine), and tap water as a last resort.

I always pack a plastic bottle with a liter or so of distilled water in my checked luggage to get me through the first night away. I used a plastic bottle and put it into a plastic bag which I seal up carefully. Never had a spill.
