Post sleep apnea test done. any chance a false reading??
i had a sleep apnea test done a few years back. the tech told me that i had SOME interuptions but not enough that i have sleep apnea. don't know the actual numbers.
i remember that i didn't sleep well at all while there. kind of hard in a strange bed and all the wires attached.
i am a load snorer, not overweight, early 30's. my girlfriend had told me that it does seem that i have trouble breathing while sleeping.
any chance that the test might not be 100%?
thanks

Call the lab or the Dr that you went ot...ask for a full copy of the study..that is 5 to 6 pages of info plus the Drs naration.  If you are still having unrefreshed sleep then there is something going on somewhere.  May not be sleep apnea...may have Narcolepsy or Idiopathic Hypersomnia (these two usually start showing up in the teens but overlooked until your current age or older....or one of the 25 or so other sleep disorders.  Could also be metabolic.

Once you get your results, you can post them on here and we can take a look at them...may or maynot be able to give you info...usually someone can though.  I would also set up an appointment with a sleep specialist.  Also have you had your Thyroid and Blood Tests doen..inclusing a urine test for B12 deficiency?  I say urine on the B12 because it is the best tell tale test for B12.

Fianlly, the tech gave you that info...but what did the Dr say?  Techs often donot give info and if they do, it is vague...it is up to the Dr to go over it with you...did you make a follow up appointment?  If the Dr was not a sleep specialist, they may not be versed with SA and not know what everything was that they were reading.

Keep us posted.

thanks for the prompt reply.

i'll see what i can do. i have moved since then and it has been a few years, as i said.
i have had thyroid and b12 testing. both show normal...

the dr i had was a typical overloaded gp dr in toronto and i had no follow up appointment.
but are there other  folks on here that might have had a negative test, later to be found that they actually do have sleep apnea?
i'm grasping threads, but i wouldn't be all that surprised if there were.

thanks

As it has been a few years, would you be able to get tested again?

I agree a lot can change in a few years and what was borderline before can quickly turn into severe as we age and gain weight.

bad timing... i'm moving across country next week and will have no dr there, so i don't know what'll happen.
and, while my age has changed, the weight is pretty much the same. 35 now. 6'1" and weigh 180ish.
i just know that my snoring is an issue. wish there was a better self test out there.
anyone know of a device you can buy in a drug store to hold the jaw out? just to see if that helps?

If you snore and if your bed mate says that it seems you have trouble breathing, you should see a doctor at your earliest possible convenience.  After you get settled and find a doctor.   You need an accurate assessment of your condition and you won't have one without another sleep test.  Polysomnography will confirm with a very high degree of accuracy whether or not you have sleep apnea and the severity of it.

This is not something you want to self-treat blindly.  It's great that you haven't gained weight these past few years, but a lot of us here are of normal weights, yet have sleep apnea.

If you're trying to avoid going on CPAP out of vanity, consider this: the stress you put on your body by not treating OSA is going to age you quite rapidly.  Stress does that to all creatures.

After I found out I had it I thought they were wrong too. I told everyone oh it's just because they gave me the sleeping pill and I slept on my back, which i don't normally do. BUT since starting on the CPAP I have been feeling a million times better than I used to!

Weight will have little bearing on things.
If your study results are 3 or 4 years old, then that's what they are 'obsolete' and will have no bearing on your present condition. You need to have a new study..........after all you can't make a proper diagnosis or form an opinion with obsolete figures.

There are no self tests.

Sure, you can get an OTC dental device.........but you still won't know what's wrong with you !!!

Go and get a proper diagnosis and move on from there.

Daniel.

I'm one of those who had a "negative" test, but really had a full blown case of OSA.  My first test was 12 years ago, I didn't sleep worth a rip, had to get up and go pee at least a half a dozen times.  The tech talked with me in the morning, I was too groggy to take it in but she said something like yours did, not enough data. No follow up was done,  I ended up on a lot of anti-pschyc drugs and didn't give a rip until my symptoms got so bad I couldn't sit down without falling asleep.  The test I had 2 years ago showed 89 events an hour, and even though I am completely compliant on cpap, and my AHI runs around 2 or 3 now, I have risidual effects of years of no treatment.  Have another test, and soon.  Some places let you take home a machine and use it over a week or so If its pretty abvious you have OSA, this will give them enough information to find out how severe you are and what air pressure you need on your cpap, or you can ask the doctor for a sleeping pill to use the night of the in -lab test so you can be sure to sleep enough. Just do it, Virginia

hi again.

i've moved now but still need to find a doctor to refer me. not many docs available in calgary.
thanks for everyone's input. i'm currently trying to get my old test results and know that i should get into a clinic as soon as i can.
one question about that... if i take a sleeping pill for the test, that won't effect the results at all?

another thing... is there anyone who knows of people (or themselves) that just heavy snoring without the apnea could cause 20 years of unrefreshing sleep?
i do sleep on my back and can't seem to change that.

thanks again
