Post Newbie Here....
I am dissecting my sleep study results. I talked with the Dr for about an hour, discussing everything under the sun. I have "mild" sleep apena, but also have PLMD, which is mild too. - If I have mild on both of these... WHY am I SOOO tired!! - Must be a whimp or something.

Well, I will try to post this as best I can - I have the report in front of me.

Sleep Duration was 302.5 mins --- 5hrs
Sleep onset Delayed - 37.5 mins
REM  onset - 166.5 min
Wakefullness after sleep 1 min   what in the world does this mean???
Stage N1 51 mins
N2 174 mins
N3 27 mins
Stage R 50.5 min

Sleep efficiency was 79%

Findings
1 apnea and 25 hypoapenas observed
apnea /hypoapena index of 5.2
Respirtory effort arousals 3.2 hr
TTL disturbance 8.3 hr

NREM - indexed at 6.0 events an hour
REM - indexed 1.2 hr
Hypoemia present .02% of sleep with 12 desaturations to an Nadir of 91%

Leg movements totaled 235  indexed at 6.1 hr.

Guessing here... the total disturbances I had in one hour, between 14-15 an hour??? Is that the same as having moderate sleep apnea? How do the two combine to make a bad nights rest???

Also, he said that the study wasn't interperated for some of the time. Does that mean that the scores would be different?? Did they only take a few hours and then average them to get the numbers? Or is that the part he did not go over for diagnosis?

Reading the others on here... I should be feeling fine... but what do I know!!

I go on the 18th to get fitted and stuff, another sleep study too to boot.

The dr told me with the combo of the Limb Disorder and the Sleep Apnea, he thinks the CPAP will help. He also put me on 300mg - 600 mg of Gabapentin (take one, then the next night if one doesn't cut it, take two...)

Thanks for reading this far!! Hope this fixes the "daytime sleepys"

Wakefulness after sleep? It simply means that you hit stage 1 sleep, then had an arousal a minute afterward. (IE you woke up 1 minute after you dozed off)

Seeing that RLS/PLMD is separate from OSA, you cant add those 2 values together for the OSA severity scale.

Also, keep in mind that all of those leg movements did not lead to arousals. What was your PLMD arousal index? Maybe it is listed as PLMA index?

He is prescribing CPAP for an AHI of 5.2? Well, it would be covered with documented daytime sleepiness.

What was your Supine AHI? Lateral AHI?

Also, I am NOT questioning the validity of the test, but I do wonder if you didnt have a few onset events. If they were short lasting episodes that "phased" out (which based on the overall AHI), then they wouldnt necessarily be score-able. A REM AHI of 0.00? Thats great. It does point to possible onset events. Then again it could be RLS...

Do you have a graph that shows at what point in time the arousals occurred? If so, let me know.

No graph. All of it was digitized.  - I just have the 2 page summary of events type of thing. I do not have the subine AHI and Lateral AHI - Although he did tell me I was all over the bed that night. I do not know what a REM AHI is.... I may have mistyped something, so I will go back over my post to make sure.

Does this mean that I don't need the machine?

If its not bad enough to make me as sleepy during the day as I feel, then what else could be going on here? - Go to bed about 9 - wake up about 6:30 - most days I take 2 naps, between 2 and 4 hours each. SOOO frustrated!!

Haven't taken a nap today, but I am a ZOMBIE too.

Thanks for helping me decode this.

I am not one who can tell you whether or not you need the machine. I was simply trying to say that 5.2 is borderline and not treatable (via CPAP) by SOME physicians. On the other hand, you also had a few respiratory effort related arousals, so maybe everything adding together is making you very tired throughout the day. It is possible that you are having some arousals associated with those leg movements, but that is an entirely different treatment (IE. Pills such as Mirapex).

I mistyped in your REM AHI, it was actually 1.2, which is normal. In fact, on a forum such as this, its wonderful.

The CPAP is worth a try. You meed the Medicare criteria for the treatment, so get titrated and see if it helps. They may also give you some treatment for the PLMD. All in all, you may wind up feeling like a kid again (energy wise).

Good luck! I would be interested to see if you were having several onset events, but they didnt give you that data, so we'll never know. In any event, let us know how your titration goes!
