Post Still waking up
I have been on cpap for 6 months now. I started at a pressure of 8, but still was not feeling good. So I had a home study and my pressure was increased to 12, even though it was mostly at 14. The doctor put  the pressure at 12 to start because I was having stomach pains from the air. It it normal to keep waking up through the night? I wake up at least 5-6 times that I know of. Then I have to put the machine back on ramp. How long does it take to sleep through the night and start feeling good? Thanks for your help.

It took me a long time to get used to my high cpap pressure.  But much of the problem was a poor mask that would leak far too much.  The mask wasn't right and the size of it wasn't right.  The leaks would wake me up.

Are you having any problems with your mask?

Did you have leg movements during your study?

sleepyjo    did you have any central apneas in your sleep study? Maybe you need to have another in lab sleep study done, if your not getting any relief of symptoms  even with increased pressure. At least to see what is really going on. you might want to check with your doctor to see what the doc thinks. I am sure the home study cannot be as complete or as thorough as the one done in a sleep lab. RAM_Sleep would be the one to tell you more about that. Anyway just a thought. I mentioned the Central Apneas because I started off on CPAP and it didn't help and had pressure increases and all, and it took 18 months and 6 sleep studies to finally get it treated properly. You probably don't have that but I just don't want to see anybody else go thru what I did, if it can be prevented. Good Luck to You!

Did she have the actigraphy? If so, then there is no way to tell if the events were centrals, unless the physician is making an educated guess. He can look at the AHI and compare it to the RDI. Some physicians feel that they can tell the difference between OSA and CSA, based on the difference in those values. In any event, these tests are said to be fairly accurate. Less accurate than a PSG, but much more accurate than I ever would have thought.

In fact, they are FDA approved, so physicians can diagnose from their results.

Im wondering what this field is going to be like in 5 years. It is getting very interesting.

I went to my sleep doctor today and he is not sure what is waking me up so frequently. He put me on Foradil- a quick  acting, long acting broncodilator to see if it lung related. He wants me to use it for 2 weeks to see if it helps. If it doesn't I'm already scheduled for another sleep study. Thanks for the input. I did not have any leg movements or central apnea. I even got a new mask which is great. Sometimes I can lay in bed and not even know it's on ---really pretty comfy. I couldn't believe it!

I had that problem of waking several times in the night too at first.  My first level was 10 and was just too high.  My doctor backed it off to 8 and that seemed to help.  I think it takes awhile to get used to.  I'm now into my second month and still have nights where I'll wake up after 3-4 hours.  I just take it off at that point.  I have only slept through the night with the mask on for maybe a week.  Lately I've had sciatica nerve pain so it seems like I can't ever get on a schedule.
