Post Is A Thick Carpet Harmful?
Moving to a decent place Aug 1st. People moving out of what will be my new apartment a day before abd they are leaving a thick carpet behind.

Is this a problem for my breathing or for my machine?

Assuming that it is clean and it is not brand new, there shouldn't be any problems.  I would vacuum it fairly frequently and if the previous tenants had pets I would treat it to kill fleas.  If you keep your CPAP on the floor, make sure that the air intake isn't blocked by the carpet.  Your filters may need more frequent replacement.

If it is a new carpet there may be a problem with it releasing chemicals for a while (the "new" smell).

Like Bearded one said, a new carpet may emit some chemicals for awhile.  In either case, I would do the following:

Use a vacuum cleaner that has an excellent filtration system-one that filters 99.9% of matter.

Think about purchasing an air purifier, especially for the room you in which you sleep.

My whole family has issues with allergies, asthma, etc.  I have always used a powerful vacuum with an efficient filtration system.  I also have an ionic breeze air purifier, which requires no disposable filters.  And of course, I have learned it is best to keep a minimum of 'things' around the house, as less upkeep is required.  I am excited for you that you got a new place!  Take careLantern4life

If you do not have allergies to dust etc then you are OK.  As others said...just do house work..vac it regular.  If it is filthy and it is an area rug and can not be cleaned up...then get rid of it.   I would try to avoid keeping my machine on the floor.

Good for you!  You are moving up..hope you like the new place!  Be careful moving!

Many of the new vacuum cleaners have HEPA filters on them.  I got one a while back and I think that the bric-a-brac doesn't get as dusty as it did with my old vacuum that just had a paper vacuum bag.

I tend to think of used carpet in the same way I would of a used mattress, or a used sofa.  It skeeves me out!  You don't know what's living down in the fibers.  Me? I'd 86 the carpet, and go with new area rugs.  Consider it piece of mind......

I've lived in many places with many different carpets, my least favorite were the 1970's apartment shags.  When I carpeted a family room, I took a Baggie full of dirt from the back yard and matched the carpet to the color of the dirt so that tracked in dirt didn't show.

When I was in the Air Force I used to get grease on my boots and I would track it into my barracks room.  The floor was tiled with tan government floor tile -- that had to be waxed.  When I bought a room sized rug for the room I got one that was mostly black with various random colors in it -- nothing, including dirt and grease, would show.
