Interesting idea about the cpap not counting toward your carry-on limit because it's a medical device. Do you need any documentation from your doctor to show or do they just accept the obvious? What about in a foreign country? We will be having some flights in China?
Thanks to all for the great responses.

FAA regulations state that medical devices (such as CPAP) are allowed as carry on luggage.........and do not count in computing your carry on allowance. There are similar regulations in Europe. Can't speak for Asia or China in particular..........but I have had personal experience in Singapore, Bangkok and Tokyo...........absolutely no problem. A friend of mine (who uses CPAP) has been in Shanghai and Bejing and has had no problems.
I doubt you will have any problems. Just to be certain......get your sleep doctor to give you a letter, outlining your condition, the necessity for CPAP and a note of the pressure requirement (in case you lose your machine and have to get one while abroad). Do not, under any circumstances, allow anyone to place your CPAP in the hold.
Finally, do not carry distilled water on board, make sure that your humidifier is empty............in some cases airport security may want to 'swab' your machine.
Now.......pack your cpap....enjoy the flight(s).....and have a great time getting used to the new family member.
Best of luck.
Daniel.
