Turning off machine before removing mask
This is the first time I heard this (on another forum). I've been on BPAP for 3 months now, I always remove the mask before turning the machine off. Just seems right to me but who knows in this crazy world?
Are these people kidding me? Or is their validity to this.
Can taking the mask off before turning off the machine damage it?In what way? I honestly doubt it, I HIGHLY doubt it, it makes no sense at all but then again I've been wrong so I wanted to know.

So many people viewing this post and nobody knows enough to give me an answer?
I guess that I must conclude that the people who told me to shut the machine off before removing the mask WERE kidding me.
Tease the new guy I guess.

I rather doubt it will harm the machine, but I turn my machine off before I take off the mask. I do it so the air blast doesn't wake up my wife.

It will do no harm to your CPAP whether you turn your device off before OR after you take your mask off. Many of these newer CPAPs have a Smart Start or Smart Stop option wherein if that option is turned on the device will sense your mask on and start or will sense you've taken your mask off and stop.
Personally, I don't care for the feature, preferring to turn my CPAP on and off myself. I manage to have a high enough HI on my own that I don't need the slightly higher HI I might get from the CPAP taking the time to decide my taking my mask off is not a high leak and therefore turn itself off. But that's just me. It is a popular option and often turned on by the local DME supplier's RT when setting up your device.

I tried the autostart/stop feature of my CPAP. I didn't like it. There was a LOUD burst of air when I removed the mask with the machine on. Same thing, didn't want to disturb my wife. I like having control of the machine. I put the mask on, make sure it feels okay, turn the machine on. When I am adjusting the mask I don't like the strong blast of air before I am ready. Before I get up I turn the machine off, then take off the mask.

Well, the cushion of the mask does need to fill w/air to provide the best seal. So what I do is put my mask on leaving one bottom strap loose, turn my xPAP ON and make sure my mask is comfortable, then attach that strap.

+1.
When it is time to wake up, I unhook one strap, take off the mask, and turn off the machine. My daughter, then about 3-4, used to wake me up in the morning by quietly coming in the room and turning the machine off, then telling me to wake up. There are few things worse than getting ready to take a breath and nothing happens - one tends to wake up rather quickly. I have since been able to convince her to at least give me fair warning before shutting off my CPAP!

I take my mask off, lay it on my nightstand, and let the auto-stop take care of shutting the machine off. When I get up during the night I disconnect the hose from my mask and shove the hose under my pillow to make it easy to find.

I to like the auto on an off feature, I get everything all ready have my masks on (I use the Liberty It has a small hose attached to it) put on the Pulse ox and then connect the hoses, and with the ASV it just starts off nice and gentle, doesn't blast you or anything but you know it is on. If I need to get up I do like the Bearded One disconnect the hose and the machine turns off, and I also use the pillow to keep the hose in place so I know where it's at.
