Post Pressure sore under nose
Hi all.  My 6 year old has developed a sore under her nose between the two nostrils.  It is not bothering her too bad as of yet but it is looking worse.  I do not know if I should put some type of cream on it, or just let it be.  I am guessing it is either from the high pressure (14/6) or from her nasal mask rubbing up against that spot night after night.  I do not want to see it get worse.  Anyone else out there have this issue?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!    Kara (Mom to Sami, 30+ nights on bipap!)

I use Ayr Saline Gel every night when I don my mask.  Twice I have developed a sore, once on the inner edge of my nare and once on the outside between my nares.  Both times I used Ayr several times during the day, applying it generously to the sore.  Both times my sore was completely gone within 2 days.

Cann-ease, aloe based and is good for that. If it looks like a pressure sore, try using differnt masks and alternate from week to week.

Thank you so much for your responses!  I will go out today and find the gels.  It seemed to bother her a little more last night.  Have a great day!

Karalea, one more thing...it could be that her mask is too tight and causing the sore.  This is something you should check.

The gel may help in the short term, but it will only help a symptom. The problem will have to be addressed. An ongoing sore can become infected.

Has her mask been properly fitted. A sore under the nose, on the bridge of the nose is usually indicative of a badly fitted mask, or a mask that is too tight. This should be investigated sooner rather than later.

Best of luck.

Daniel.

If it is a pressure sore, then I suggest having several masks to choose from. This is a problem that can happen, after all you have something pressing on your skin for up to 8hrs a night, night after night.  It does not take much to cause a pressure sore much like a bed sore.

What I do is have a nasal pillow mask, a nasal mask and a full face mask. I alternate between them from week to week.
I do like my nasal mirage micro the best and I do use it more then the others but if I feel a sore spot on my face I change to the full face for a week or so then use the nasal pillow mask then back to my nasal micro that I love so much.

It is not always possible to use a pillows mask depending on your pressure and comfort level, I have been using a pillows even at 14.0 a somewhat high pressure, some can not take that high of a pressure on a pillows mask.

Becareful what you use for gels, some can damage and break down your mask seals, The Cann-ease I talked about will not.

Let us know how it goes.
