Post The Post Formerly Known as Recovery From UPPP Surgery
Hey Y'all,

I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.  At the same time, I had a question that was hoping to be answered. Before I begin I would like to get a few things off my chest. I'd like to say thanks to the many folks that make this forum possible as well as the many that have added their input into the post labeled 'Recovery from UPPP surgery.'  I read what felt like hundreds of pages of advice and had not seen one ounce of malevalent words until the last few pages where the post was subsequently closed. I've been on many other forums before and have seen malicious words attack 'newbies of the board' as they were simply posting innocent questions. With that said, again congrats to the moderators on keeping a peaceful forum. I'm glad that the forum is still up because I feel it contains a plethora of information for people enduring the pains that I am currently under and gives solice to those that need support. I pray that it never gets deleted. The amount of support that I had read was simply amazing.

But I digress. To give you a simple background, my real name is Ray (I know my ID may seem tough to say) and I live in the IE in southern California. I am in the health care profession but am in no way a physician of any sort.  Although I would have to say that about 30 of my closest friends are doctors or dentists, none are well versed in sleep apnea.  I'm a 26 y/o male that is about 5'6 and weighing about 205 lbs pre op. I don't look overweight, which ensues a 'thick' figure, but I am very overweight (obviously).  And I guess I have an 18 inch neck. This hopefully will give y'all a better idea of what I physically look like and thus wil be able to help me out a little bit.

Apparently I've had OSA my entire life and its just been getting progressively worse as time had passed.  My friends in college told me to get a sleep study and I finally succumbed in 2006. I was diagnosed with severe OSA and was prescribed a BiPAP with pressures of 24/20 (or is it 20/24, not too sure). I was given a humidifier but obviously was unable to tolerate the machine at all. I had it gathering dust for a while before I realized that my sleep was slowly killing me and something had to be done. I went to a DDS that specialized in sleep apnea and he tested me and told me that my airway is only taking in 1/3 of the air that the average male should be taking in. Less, when I sleep. I went to a DDS thinking that I may want to have the piller palatal treatment performed.

I later went to my ENT who recommended UPPP surgery. I did a little research, not a lot. I'm not sure what my AHI is, y'all refer to it quite a few times in this board, but my RDI was 69 (I don't know if there is any correlation there at all). In any case, I went through surgery 7/9/08 and today is day 9.  I must admit that many people from that previous forum were correct in what will work and what won't.  Very Happy   I haven't eaten much throughout the recovery period. Things have been getting better slowly, as expected.  I was given amoxicillin as an antibiotic and lortab elixir for the pain. Everything was going along ok until last night.  Every time I would partake of water or medicine, I would get a stinging pain, like I had an open wound in my throat (I know, I know, I just had surgery right?). And sleeping all night, I would swallow saliva and taste traces of blood. Obviously there was no river of blood at which point I would have gone to the ER. But now it is morning and it seems to have subsided just a little bit. I still taste blood (a little), with every swallow. I know the MD explained that I would bleed within 24 hours as well as 7-10 days afterward. I'm wondering if this is just the stitches, or if anyone else is going through this? I'm not eating much (a regular jamba juice takes me a few days to eat). I'm running out of pain meds but I only seem to using them throughout the evenings. I usually don't take pain meds during the day for the past 2 days as the pain has been at a constant 4 out of 10.  Any advice? Anyone out there?

Ray

It is probably where your throat is starting to scab up and then the scab splits a little.

Did your ENT prescribe you any of the mouthwashes?

He prescribe the miracle mouthwash that the pharmacy mixes for you which is a huge help with the pain. He also prescribe a mix of baking soda, salt, kayo syrup, and water to inse and gargle 4 times a day. Also try some cream of chicken soup, that seems to sooth the throat as well. I tried a bite of bread last night and Im not quite ready for that yet.

Ray,
Thank you for posting your questions and experience on the board.   I'm new to this web-site and had UPPP surgery 3 days ago.   It is painful and I am experiencing some light blood taste in the am.

Like yourself, I am of "thick" stature and most people don't believe that I'm 230 lbs.   I have a 17 1/2 thick neck.   But I am almost 50 years old and seem to have had OSA since I was in my mid twenties.

I am familiar with the statistics, on the surgery, but I had such severe Apnea that I just wanted an improvement.   I could not tolerate the CPAP and tried the Dental Appliance.    (a 50% improvement will be a great improvement to me.)  My surgeon was awesome and has pegged everything on the head so far.    If I can get down under 180 lbs I will have minimal OSA.

I haven't seen a post about how well the rest of your recovery went.  I would be interested to hear.     I feel like I'm being a wimp for taking just 5 days off from work.    I've only had cold liquids and jello to date, just started on ice creams (without additives.) today and hope to progress to mashed potatoes and puddings soon.  Haven't done any warm liquids yet.

Did you receive any good advice?

I just went through a tonsilectomy and UPPP on Monday (Sept. 22) and the pain is crazy!  My story is a bit different than a lot on this board though.  I have very mild sleep apnea (6 occurences per hour I believe it was).  My issue was more about snoring as well as enlarged uvula and tonsils.  I would literally wake up some mornings gagging on my uvula it was so big.  After considering it I figured surgery would be best for my situation.

My doctor is awesome.  He went over all the possible side effects, risks, complaints beforehand and didn't pressure me into any decision.  I have had some problems since my surgery though.  Of course I was one of the ones in the very few percent that would experience a bleed.  This happened about 48 hours after surgery.  I was told if it were to happen to go to the closest hospital right away.  What a mistake that was!  I sat there bleeding from my throat for almost 3 hours when a doctor finally came into see me.  All they did was recommend I drive to a hospital where an ENT specialist was.  Anyways, I was in the OR shortly afterwards getting the bleed to stop.  I just got out of the hospital today and am paranoid it will happen again.

Any advice on how to avoid the bleeds?  Obviously staying hydrated is important.  Sleeping kills me though because I constantly breathe through my mouth and it gets pretty dry.  I even set up a vaporizer.  I'm to the point now where I'm thinking of setting my alarm clock every half hour to wake up and drink a bunch.  Is clearing your throat bad?  Coughing hurts like hell but is that bad for stitching?  Any other recommedations?

I didn't experience any bleeding and it's almost three weeks.  I suggest, as my dr. did, do not do anything strenuous the first week (in your case maybe two.)   Staying hydrated is important but do not drink alot of milk products.  this will create phlem.
I am also a mouth breather and I used Biotene mouthwash (tastes wierd) but it's non alcoholic, therefore your mouth and throat may be less dry.

Try not to clear your throat or cough.  I'm almost the end of the third week and i'm just now eating solid foods (Did MUSHY for a week.) mashed potatoes and overcooked pasta. (Stay away from the Hot stuff the first few weeks.)

Keep me posted on your recovery.

Michael

Hey Michael,

It's good to know what kind of timeline I can expect.  Obviously everyone is different, but it gives me a good idea.  I'm a younger guy in decent shape, so I'm hoping that works to my advantage.  I can already guarantee I've lost about 10 pounds though this week!   Shocked

I've had ice cream and frozen yogurt on the menu but I've switched to sorbet today just because of the phlem.  It seems to be better.  The bad thing is all the good flavors are the colors you can't eat (mostly red).  I'm stuck with orange sorbet, orange popsicles, etc.  Meanwhile my wife is making pizza, eating BBQ chips and drinking my beer.  I think she's really enjoying my suffering.   Laughing

Be glad you didn't experience "a bleed".  I absolutely thought I had a chance of dying.  I'll spare you the details of what they had to do, it was pretty rough.

Take care,
Dan
