To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as an MPAP. I've been frequenting these apena support forums for 3 years this month.
Your husband more likely needs a full face mask if he is a mouth breather. There is no xPAP that controls or stops mouth breathing. What your friend MIGHT have been actually referring to was a bi-level (Bi-PAP is Respironics' proprietary name for their bi-levels and VPAP is Resmed's proprietary name for their bi-levels). Bi-level produce a lower pressure for expiration (EPAP) and a higher pressure for inhalation (IPAP). They don't push and/or pull. They just provide two different levels of pressure depending on whether you are inhaling or exhaling.
Your husband's swallowing air is called "aerophagia" and it is not uncommon, especially when starting therapy, especially at the higher pressures. AT 15 cms of pressure they begin to consider that a high pressure. If he is having difficulty w/bloating and "gas" he should discuss this w/his sleep doctor.
xPAP just refers to any type of PAP device whether CPAP, APAP, Bi-PAP or VPAP. Stay w/this forum and read the varous Stickies as well as the posts and you will be more knowledgeable about your hubby's CPAP in a week than it sounds like your friend knows regardless how long he's been on his "MPAP".
