I may be off base, but I seem to remember a couple of years ago a need to replace my mask.  I had snapped one of the plastic parts, and it was only a couple of months old.  Insurance only covers a new mask every 6 months, so I had gone in and found a replacement on a reputable website.  I tried to place the order, and got a pop up about where to mail the prescription.  I was blown away.  It was not like this was a medication or that insurance was paying for it.  I was just surprised.  It was a good thing that I'm a pack rat and had saved my last 3 masks.  I jerry-rigged them to make a working mask for 4 months until I could get a new one.

Hi Joe.  I don't know what web site you used, but the only thing requiring a prescription is the machine.  A couple of the reputable cpap web sites mention this on their sites.  Also, I think there is a warranty on the masks.

Glad you were able to jerry rig your own though!

sleepyjean is correct-only a machine requires a prescription because the doctor is actually ordering a "pressure to be set on it".Masks;headgear and filters are accessories and do not require scripts.

Hmm--Apria required me to have a prescription to get a mask from them, of course they also told me that as long the machine turns on and blows air that nothing is wrong with it "because those things are pretty durable".     I don't use them anymore.
