Post WHAT do you think about this MIRACLE CURE for OSA?
Hey all.

I just followed a news link about some new miracle cure device for snoring and OSA.  I took a look at it and it is so simple, it might just work...... (think the something like the wheel here folks).
It looks like it is only marketed in NewZealand at this time, but the FDA has given approval and it can be perscribed by your MD.  I don't think you can get one in the US yet.
Since I can't post any links, try searching for "aveosleep" on Google and follow the first link.

I have contacts in NZ and was thinking about "securing" one.  I don't think I need my MD to get something this simple.

Think it would work?

Post not sure about this one
I went to google and looked it up as you suggested. I can't see me sleeping with my tongue stuck out all night. The picture shows the tongue past the lips. Keep posting and educate us if it works for you.

This might work *IF* the tongue is the ONLY reason that you have SA.  Dave will prolly correct me if I am wrong, but the way I understand it, it involves the soft tissue in the throat also.

FDA approval doesn't mean much, just means that it might help, and it won't hurt you, (other than the horrific dry mouth Wink )

tongue retaining devices aren't anything new.  Take a look at the websi quietsleep.com for pictures of many brands and styles of oral appliances, as well as reviews of their efficacy.

The mask is hard enough to get use to.  I do not think I could sleep biting my tong all night.

Post 100% Effective Oral Device for OSA
Hi Guys!!
OK, I must apologize, I've been holding out on you, there is is an oral device out there that is 100% effective for the control of snoring and sleep apnea.  No question, period.  Will work in the most difficult airway and severe OSA.  It's been around for years, is approved by the FDA, but not for use in OSA.  For that matter, not outside the hospital, but that's a minor issue.

It's called the Laryngeal Mask Airway.  It looks like this:

And it works thusly:

In order to apply this device, and I'll try to keep this as non-technical as I can, all you have to shove it all the way down your throat.  Literally.  The LMA covers your tracheal opening and completely protects your airway from OSA, snoring, rain, snow, sleet, everything.  Seriously.

On the other hand, if you think a mask is uncomfortable, wait'll you try this.  And oops!  You still have a mask, anyway.

OK, this a tongue-in-cheek solution here, in case someone really wanted to try this, but here's the point in these oral devices.  These snore aids on the market all kinda fiddle with the teeth, tongue and jaw, and hopefully indirectly keep the airway open during sleep.  Most don't at all. Maybe some can, sometimes and in some people.  The only way to know for sure is to get a sleep study with the device in place.
The only device that will be 100% effective will be a device that directly affects the structures in question.  And there's no way that can be done without being quite invasive.  Or downright dangerous if done under a "treat yourself at home" program.
In re:  that Aveo, all the wording in that ad sounds a little tricky, it seems like it's just a snoring device, but they want to sell to the OSA market.  I didn't see any links to clinical trials in there, but I'd like to read any scientific data they might have had, if there was anything pertinent.  But if you've got OSA, especially severe OSA, don't use this device at all unless you have approval from your physician to do so.

And, c'mon, seriously, the Miracle Cure for OSA and there's 4 links in a Google search?  As we say in the sleep business-- "Wake Up!"

Post Cures for OSA
Sleepydave: Do I get it, the down the throat cure isn't exactly a cure all.  But, what do you think about the trial system they are using by putting stints in the soft part of your throat? What has been the results so far and will it get FDA approval?

I seen a clip on the NBC news last night and this doctor talks about a certain anti-depressant drug that they are looking into that will help people with sleep apnea...did anyone happen to see this?

Post Devices
Hi all!
Nice doggie, 88!  The drug is probably Mirtazapine and/or a derivative of it.
Amg1957, I'm thinking you're talking about the Pillar Procedure.  This is still a procedure that involves the upper airway.  If your OSA involves the lower airway, which is usually the case in adults, especially if it's severe, then you're not treating the site of involvement.  See your ENT MD to determine the type of therapy that's best for you.
The LMA has been used by anesthetists and anesthesiologists for years as a tool to stabilize the airway during sedation to avoid the same physiology that occurs in sleep apnea.  So, yes, it absolutely WILL work, but my point is, that's the type of invasiveness you need to guarantee 100% effectiveness in the mechanical device treatment of OSA.  And even if you could get the FDA to approve this as an in-home treatment for OSA (and you won't) why bother?  CPAP does the same thing.
