Post Insomnia
I was diagnosed today with sleep apnea- they want me to do a second sleep study to get me a Cpap.  Fun.  Here is my question.....I don't sleep.  I was clocked in at sleeping 1.5 hours during the sleep study, and that is about normal for me.  Is this common with other people too?  I don't fall asleep during the day or anything, but I am extremely tired.  It has been happening for so long that I think my body is getting used to not sleeping much at all.
I am only 35, not overweight at all, don't smoke, drink, or even use caffeine since I can't sleep as it is.  I am honestly surprised with the diagnosis.  I am also newly pregnant (VERY early)  but it is my 5th and don't think that would have a correlation.  Anyone else not sleep much and have a fix for that?  Finding time to go to another sleep study is going to be tricky these next few weeks!  PLus, I am not looking forward to being hooked up to those leads again, or even more so to a machine for the rest of my life!!  Thank you!

As you were diagnosed with sleep apnea, it will be a very good thing for your health and the health of your child to keep the titration appointment and to use your new CPAP.  As you have trouble sleeping it might be a good idea to discuss with your doctor some sort of medication to help you sleep during the titration.  As you know, your sleep is not at all normal; you should be sleeping something like 7 to 8 hours a day.

You need to do the titration study.  It is not all about being able to handle the tiredness during the day...SA puts your heart, brain and other organs through major stress...can you imagine what it will do to the fetus also..not to mentio the lack of O2?  You have to read up on SA since it does not sound like you have full knowledge of it...it is not just you, many people are not aware what it is really all about.

for the proper development of your baby you need to continue with the sleep studies

if you eventually do get a CPAP machine they arent all that hard to live with if you have a positive attitude to it

do it for your baby Applause

Maybe you are one of those rare people that can survive on less sleep, but obviously your sleep study showed something to give you the diagnoses of Sleep Apnea! And now that you know that, isn't it your responsibility especially as a mother to do everything possible to stay healthy and to be there for your children? Do the titration study, get the CPAP if needed and use it, and be the best mom you can be to your kids, and come to the forum for advice and support, we are all here to help.

Wow guys, thanks for making me feel like a bad mom, which by the way, if any of you actually knew me, you woudl know that I am not.  THis is also my 5th child, so I am not stupid when it comes to kids.  I simply asked a question about insomnia and mentioned that I was pregnant.....I am not at all saying that I was going to brush off the diagnosis, I just had some questions.  How sanctimonious of all of you to pass judgement.
My AHI is a 10, I just got the report today.  Is there anyone out there that can in a NICE manner tell me how high that is. My oxygen sat was 97%.  Sleep distribution was abnormal with lack of slow wave and reduced sleep REM.

Mom, I think an AHI of 10 is moderate and a lack of slow wave sleep and little REM is characteristic of OSA.  Your oxygen sat. is very good, esp. since you are pregnant.

How do you manage with so little sleep?  I'd be a zombie!  (I don't have OSA, my husband does, but I have had 2 sleep studies).

Try to do a titration study and see how it goes.  Maybe it will help you sleep longer.  Also, it occurs to me that you can sleep very lightly and not feel as if you are asleep but a sleep study will show that you were.  Sleeping with all the wires is a hassle for most people; it is easier when you are at home.  Please keep us informed.

Sorry there...I do not think anyone was saying you are a bad mother etc.  It was your words quoted above that came across as you looking for an alternative to going back for the titration study.  SA is not a minor condition...it is something that gets worse over time...today minor...10 years down the road it can become severe if not treated.  Catching it now is good.  I think everyone just wanted the seriousness of it all brought to the forefront for you.

An AHI of 10 is considered mild apnea.  I believe I read some of the dictated info in another thread....looks like you are not getting restorative sleep and that your REM is riddled with apneas.  Get a copy of the full report...it is the Dr dictation and about 5 to 7 additional pages.  The info that is most helpful would be the percentages in each sleep stage, the type of apneas, did they pick up on any UARS and let us know how the titration goes too.

I am going to go back, and I do realize that it is not something to be taken lightly.  All I was saying was that finidng a night to go was going to be tricky and I was not looking forward to it.
Yes, I unfortunately sleep very little.  This has been the case for years, and I guess I just barrel through it.  It is not fun and I would much rather feel rested, so hopefully that will come soon.  After my sleep study the technician said I slept for 1.5 hours.....which is what I thought was my average.  I used to be able to take 2 tsp of Benedryl at night and get about 4 hours, but now having to use the bathroom a lot (ahhh, early pregnancy!), it is hard to fall back asleep again.  I will have to make a post to see what other pregnant women have done with the machine, etc.  I would feel awful going to get the cpap appt and having them unhook me every 30 minutes to go use the bathroom! Smile
