I've come down to requesting my sleep doc writing a script for either the Resmed S8 Autoset II or the Respironics M series Auto A-Flex. My DME sells more Repironics and can read the Smartcard but doesn't have the capability to read the Resmed. I understand the Resmed is easier to read when the full data capability is enabled. Is the Respironics that much more difficult?

Also, I'm trying to figure out the power bricks with each one. From what I can tell the Resmed heated humidifier gets its power from the S8 but is there a brick for the S8? It looks like the Respironics humidifier has a small brick and cord that plugs into the CPAP brick. Is that correct? I would rather not have a mess of electrical cords to deal with.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm going to fax my request to my sleep doc possibly as early as Monday morning.

I've had a new Respironics pre-M Series Auto w/C-Flex. I got excellent therapy w/it. BUT, yes, it too, had that extra third piece, the platform for the humidifier. The Resmeds do not have that extra power brick platform. What I didn't like about it was the limited data via the LCD screen. (I understand there is a little more data available via the M Series LCD screen but I "thought" I'd read, still not as much as the Resmeds). It is not real difficult to access the LCD screen data: unplug, plug back in, push a button or buttons, wait for a beep, I forget the exact sequence but that's the gist of it.

W/the Resmed fully data capable xPAPs it is a simple matter of a two button press and hold for 3-4 seconds. That gives you the Efficacy Data screen (and Usage data as well). Efficacy data includes 95th percentile Pressure, 95th percentile Leak, AHI, AI, HI; Usage data gives you total hours used, total nights used, number of nights used since device first used, and number of hours used that night. Also the averages for the same data for 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and a year after you've used it that long.

Both the Resmed and the Respironics work on an internal, 24 hour, noon to noon, clock so you must access the previous night's data before noon as at noon that data is rolled over into the total averages.

I was started w/a Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR and got excellent therapy w/it but caught "auto fever" from the forums and bought the new Respironics pre-M Series Auto out of pocket. Shortly after the opportunity arose tto purchase a lightly used (505 hours) Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage complete and I jumped at the chance to buy it. I sold the Respironics pre-M Series Auto to my son in law.

I have COPD and have since been brought back in for a bi-level titration and now have a Resmed VPAP Auto bi-level. I refused to even consider the Respironics M Series Auto bi-level. The M Series devices are known to drop data one or two nights a month, have the irritating blue lights that can't be turned off, the power brick, the notoriously poorly designed integrated humidifier ... you WILL get excellent therapy from the Respironics M Series devices tho. I wouldn't criticize them for that AT ALL!

The Resmed software and cable reader are available online. It is professional software, unlike Respironics they do not offer a patient version of their software. The software does provide more data than is available via the LCD screen. For the S8 IIs you need ResScan v.3.4 unless you have Vista on your 'puter, in which case you would need ResScan v.3.5

I love my Resmeds.

What is there in the way of power bricks? Noise? Ease of cleaning? Anything else you can tell me? I assume you have the heated humidifier.

I have an Intellipap CPAP and it has no bricks, the power cord plugs directly into the back of the machine; there is also a 12 volt power input jack if you want to run it from a battery.  If an AC cord and a DC batery cord are plugged in, the machine will operate from the AC cord and it will automatically switch over to the DC cord if the AC power fails.

A heated humidifier can be simply plugged dirctly to the bottom of the machine; the air  and power connections are plugged in when the humidifier is snapped on.  There is only one AC power cord and no bricks, even with a heated humidifier.
